Criminal Justice

The high reoffending rate among prisoners in England and Wales continues to challenge governments, and numerous ideological and policy shifts have largely failed to reduce it. Sixty per cent of offenders leaving prison reoffend within 12 months, a figure that has remained fairly stable since 2000 (Ministry of Justice, 2012). In the same period there has been a growing interest in developing alternative conceptualisations of offending behaviour generally, and in particular, notions of assisting desistance are increasingly being incorporated into offender management practices (Dickie, 2013). The central tenets of personalisation align closely with the framework for assisting desistance in terms of individualised approaches which build on strengths, respect and individual agency rather than needs and risks (Weaver and McNeil, 2007; McNeil et al., 2012).

The following example illustrates the practical application of personalisation within the criminal justice system.
